Al Farabi : A Muslim Philosopher

Abu Nashr muhammad ibnu Muhammad al farabi, to give him his full name, was born in Turkestan in the year 870 A.D. at the early age he went to bagdad, the centre of greek sciences and philosophy, where his brilliance made him an outstanding figure. The latter part of his life was spent in Damascus, where he died in December 950 A.D.

Al farabi, while always faithful to the religion of islam, had never been afraid to  explore the truth of the other racer and creeds. When he was studying in bagdad, the first Arabic translation of the works of aristotles appered in the city. He himself is a doctor and psysician and familiar with mathematics and natural sciences. He quickly discovered in aristotles’ the answer to many problem that perplexed him. His ability to reason and his love of logic led him to attempt a reconciliation between concept and the nature of thought, which had been advanced by plato and aristotles. Al farabi’s view  on social ethics were realistic and direct. On his “dissertation on the ideal state” he differs the man from animal world, for man is not equipped by nature to fight for self reservation and self development. He can only gain complete satisfaction of new physical, intellectual and moral needs by becoming a part of the social fabric. Al farabi stood at cross roads where greek and muslim philosopher meet and naturally enrich each other, making the ground fertile for some inventive thoughts and doctrines. He read and read, in fact, the entire works of the greek philosopher and made the subjects of some his book like “commentaries on phisics of aristotles” and “commentaries nicohomachean ethics”. On the thousandth anniversary of the death of the great philosopher, Turkish universities issued several publication of his life and works. Ceremonies took place in all Turkish cities particularly at Ankara and Istanbul, and different aspects of al farabi’s philosophy.
